Match Report
Bedford School 1st vs  Haileybury Mixed-U18A
On: Saturday, 10 Oct 2020
Venue: Away

We travelled to Hanbury Manor to take on Haileybury in our first fixture of the year. We elected to play foursomes, in preparation for our HMC match against Uppingham at Luffenham Heath next Thursday.

Finlay Cummings & Louis Densham went off first, playing against a pair of girls both playing off 5. The red tees at Hanbury Manor offer a much bigger advantage than at Woburn: the boys ball striking was superb, and Louis holed several clutch putts to see the boys win 4&3.

Lawrence Jefferys & Jack Peters played the second match against a Haileybury pair with similar handicaps, so the match was played off scratch. The boys weren't at the fluent best with either their irons or their putters. With light becoming an issue, the match was cut short to 16 holes. Playing the par 3 16th 1 down, and the opposition missing the green to the right, Lawrence just carried the bunker on the right to leave Jack in the fringe. Jack left his chip 8-10ft short and Lawrence lagged the putt for what would've been a hard fought half. Nevertheless, we are expecting big things from this pair moving forward.

Freddie Tucker & Shaun Thomas played the third match having to give away 5 shots. One of their adverseries playing off 14 was described more like an 8 or 9 handicapper by their coach, so this was a considerable amount of shots to give. The boys played solid, tough matchplay golf most of the way around, but a couple of short game errors on 14 opened the door for the Haileybury pair to go 1 up with two to play. They then closed the game out 2&1 on the 15th green.

Well done to Dale Sirivisal & Holly (in Eddie's absence) who were 3up through 14 when bad light stopped play in their friendly rubber.

Overall, we felt a little disappointed to have lost, but we will be better for the run having knocked off some of the rust and look forward to the real stuff starting in the week.
